Let the outdoor adventure begin with exploration of our natural spaces around Canmore and in Kananaskis Country! Through fun outdoor based daily field trips and activities, participants will use all five of their senses to discover the wonders of nature. They will learn from educators, researchers and guest speakers about wildlife, including: invertebrate sampling, amphibian studies, plant walks as well as having fun fishing, hiking and doing nature crafts – and that’s just the beginning! This camp includes a full day field trip to Bow Valley Provincial Park.

“Water Watch Dogs” 10 – 12 year olds
Our world of water – it’s ours to learn about and love! Through hiking, crafts and nature games, we’ll explore the wonders of water; from creeks and ponds to lakes and streams. As junior naturalists, participants will build on their personal experiences with the outdoor world. They will have fun researching amphibians; fishing with Trout Unlimited; and heading out on a full day excursion to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. Let the water adventures begin here!
NOTE:  Unfortunately, due to low registration, the "Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes" has been cancelled.
“Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes” 13 – 15 year olds
Ever wondered how the experts do what they do? Participants will be in the field with educators and biologists exploring real life science while learning how to be safe in our wild spaces. Opportunities may include spending time with bear dogs, monitoring wildlife camera sites, electrofishing, wildlife tracking and bird monitoring. Get ready for fun adventure days and be prepared to hike, mountain bike and be active all day. This camp includes a full day field trip to the Elbow Valley.

The Friends of Kananaskis Country in 2005 developed, in partnership with Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and
Culture and the Elbow Watershed Partnership, an educational field study for grade 8 & 9 and Biology 20 students.

Field-Study-2.jpg

In 2010 the program is made possible through the collaborative efforts of The Friends of Kananaskis Country, Tourism, Parks, Recreation – Kananaskis Country, Elbow River Watershed Partnership, Lafarge Canada Inc. and The City of Calgary.

Students will stop at key locations along the Elbow River within Kananaskis Country to test the water for dissolved oxygen, nitrates, phosphates, PH, turbidity, temperature and aquatic invertebrates. This experiential field study is designed to challenge students to predict and then discover human impacts on river ecology.

“Our rivers are an expression of our landscape.” The program is based on this premise with participants being challenged to predict and then discover just what it is that the river is expressing. The objective of the curriculum based field study internship is to provide a student, interested in pursuing the field of environmental education, with mentoring and the opportunity to gain skills directly related to designing, presenting and evaluating environmental education programming

Providing educational programs such as this is a vital step to ensuring the preservation and ecological integrity of Kananaskis Country.

Memorial Benches

NOTICE: This program is currently under review and therefore new applications are not being accepted. However, your name will be added to a waiting list and you will be contacted when your request can be processed.

Memorial benches celebrate a life well lived and benefit all visitors to Kananaskis Country by providing a comfortable and reflective place to rest.

This is a wonderful way to create a tangible place of honour where friends and loved ones can visit. Such a program also enhances the long-term health of Kananaskis Country. The memorials program creates a benevolent source of funding. Individuals, families, or groups may honour the memory of a friend and loved one through this program.

Amphitheatre backrests and visitor centre interpretive displays are another way to show your support of the unique place that is Kananaskis Country. Endowments that are used to support programs such as interpretation and environmental education are in demand.
